Motorists over the age of 50 years are more careful than younger drivers, figures have suggested.
Analysis from Saga Motor Insurance revealed that insurance claims among this age group are down by 17 per cent this month compared with last year.
The data indicates that older drivers are choosing to stay off the roads as heavy snowfall and ice on motorways increases the likelihood of suffering an accident .
Dr Ros Altmann, director-general of the Saga Group, said: "It is really encouraging that older motorists are using their experience and planning around the bad weather to ensure they are not out on the roads in the ice and snow."
Earlier this week, a report from AA noted that claims had doubled on Monday, December 20th compared with a normal Monday in December.
The study also found that 70 per cent of all claims were for accidents related to snow and ice.
