Direct Line offers car insurance customers advice on winter driving

Tue, 14 Dec 2010

Sub-zero temperatures over the winter are likely to lead to a rise in car insurance claims .

But while snow tyres are commonplace in other countries, the fitting of them in the UK is causing confusion amongst Britons when it comes to the effect it will have on their car insurance.

With more snow and ice forecast over the next couple of weeks, Dircet Line has issued some advice to help motorists deal with the conditions.

The car insurance provider said that tyres should be fitted by an expert and that snow tyres should only be used in cold weather.

Remember to let your insurer know you have removed them in the warmer months, the insurer said.

"Customers should always inform us of any modifications or changes to their vehicles," commented Andy Goldby, director of motor underwriting at Direct Line.

"While we do not increase or decrease premiums for the fitting of snow tyres, we would strongly recommend that they are installed by an expert and should only be used in winter conditions."
