Car insurance customers have been warned of the threat posed to their vehicles by the freezing temperatures, ice and poor visibility which have been forecast over the coming days.
The Highways Agency said that "exceptionally low temperatures" are expected, which could leave roads slippery, especially on hills and where trees overhang the surface.
Further to this, the agency warned that stopping distances can be increased tenfold when driving on ice.
In addition, the Highways Agency recommended motorists give gritters a wide, slow berth and avoid driving on untreated snow.
Packing the car with an emergency kit could also prove critical should the weather change suddenly.
This comes after an article appearing on This is Money said that motorists can bring down the cost of their car insurance by taking out a policy to cover the cost of their excess.
The more excess you agree to pay in the event of an accident, the lower your premium, the website said.
