Rising car insurance costs are leading to dishonesty among motorists

Thu, 05 Aug 2010

Following revelations that insurance costs have climbed 31 per cent since this time last year, some 38 per cent of car insurance customers have admitted to lying in order to get a better premium.

According to research conducted by confused.com, men are more likely to be dishonest than their female counterparts, with nearly half admitting to fibbing to get cheaper cover.

Further to this, the research found that drivers are most likely to lie about annual mileage (14 per cent), although other common lies included where they keep their car (8 per cent) and its value (7 per cent).

Will Thomas, head of motor at confused.com, warned: "By failing to tell the insurance provider your true circumstances you are risking invalidating your cover entirely, which ultimately means you are uninsured.

"Whilst it's easy to think you will never be caught out, insurance companies are getting savvier, particularly in these hard financial times, and lying is a type of fraud ."

Earlier this week, research from Defaqto revealed that many car insurance policies in the UK do not include any cover for uninsured loss recovery .
