A car insurance firm has claimed that the heatwave in early July caused road accidents to soar because male drivers were distracted by womens' skimpy outfits.
According to research conducted by Sheilas Wheels, 29 per cent of men admitted being distracted by short skirts and low-cut tops in the warm weather, which led to a record numbers of accidents on the roads.
The car insurance company added that this phenomenon is getting worse each year. Indeed, in 2009 men made 16.4 per cent more claims during the summer than in any other month.
Furthermore, the research shows that a quarter of male drivers have had at least one summertime crash or very near miss in the last five years, this compares to just 17 per cent of women.
A spokesperson for Sheilas' Wheels car insurance said: "Men are significantly more likely than women to claim during the summer months - often as a result of wandering eyes."
This follows the publication of a study conducted by Admiral which found that more than three-quarters of car insurance customers believe the driving age should be higher than 17, with 47 per cent saying it should be 18.
