New pothole guidelines could help car insurance customers

Thu, 08 Apr 2010

A new Code of Practice recently launched by the government could help cut the number of potholes on roads and help car insurance policy holders.

The Department for Transport has introduced new measures that will ensure any companies carrying out roadworks adequately resurface the roads so that vehicles and other users are not inconvenienced.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan said: "The new Code of Practice will ensure that when utilities dig up the road they replace it properly - reducing disruption as well as the probability of potholes developing."

Also included in the code are guidelines to get contractors to use recycled materials and sustainable working methods in order to reduce carbon emissions .

This latest development comes soon after the government announced in the budget that £100 million of extra funding would be provided to local authorities to repair roads that had been damaged over the course of the winter.

It was recently revealed by AA that potholes cost insurance companies around £2.85 million a month through claims.
