Motorists may want to reconsider their car insurance options after new research showed how multi-car policies may not be providing savings .
According to swiftcover.com, some people with this kind of policy may be paying 60 per cent more than they would if they took out individual cover for each car.
With 32 per cent of households now having access to two or more cars, the organisation is urging drivers to check alternatives.
Tina Shortle, marketing director at swiftcover.com, said: "People are being led to believe that insuring two or more cars on the same policy automatically gives drivers the best deal, but as our research shows, that's not the case.
"Drivers who want to get the lowest possible premiums should always be sure to check all of the available options, as it's clear that using one insurer for both is not necessarily the cheapest option."
Admiral recently said that customers could make significant savings by going for a multi-car policy .
