Car insurers have been given advice on stopping thieves from stealing their cars and keeping premiums low.
According to figures revealed by AA, at least 53 cars are stolen every day after a set of keys are taken during a home burglary .
The organisation has said that keys should be kept in a secure place, that a spare set should not be left lying around the house and that a tracker should be fitted to vehicles to give extra security .
In addition to this, keeping the car locked in a garage could also deter thieves while reducing the cost of insuring it at the same time.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, noted the fact that it is almost impossible for a modern car to be stolen without a set of keys.
He added: "A common tactic for thieves is to take keys off hall tables or from convenient key racks near the door, simply by 'fishing' for them with a pole through the letterbox.
"Burglars are also adept at opening doors secured with conventional slam-shut barrel locks."
Sainsbury's Finance recently revealed that car insurance premium increases had been the major contributory factor to the rising cost of running a vehicle .
