A decision by the government to introduce the electronic delivery of car insurance certificates has been welcomed by the industry.
The Department of Transport has confirmed the plans, which will come in to force at the end of April, enabling car insurance customers to get their certificates through a website or as an email attachment.
Simon Douglas, head of AA Car Insurance, said the decision was important and that security measures would ensure the electronic delivery of certificates is not compromised.
He added: "This is good for the industry because it will reduce the huge amount of paperwork, administration and postage costs involved.
"It is good for customers because their documents will be available promptly and it overcomes the necessity to apply for a duplicate if the original is lost."
The British Insurance Brokers Association also hailed the development, which it had worked with the government to bring about, and said it could save the industry over £10 million.
