Paper certificates for car insurance will begin to be phased out this week as electronic versions are introduced.
This Is Money has reported that a system is now being implemented whereby the car insurance customer is emailed a certificate once they have bought their policy.
While the motorist will be able to print out the certificate, they will also be able to request one from the insurance company if they would like one.
The article notes that some insurance companies have already tested an electronic system which requires customers to set up a password-protected account in order to access any paperwork.
A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers told the news provider: "This will make the process quicker for consumers and save money for insurers, which will make the industry more efficient."
AA Car Insurance has previously said that the introduction of electronic certificates will save money on paperwork, administration and postage costs.
