Drivers forced to pay to repair damage to their vehicles caused by potholes could be able to recoup some of their outlay, it has been suggested.
According to Mike Powell, an insight analyst at financial research company Defaqto, a number of cars are likely to be adversely affected by the state of British roads through the year as councils struggle to fill in the huge number of potholes created as a result of the severe winter weather.
With this in mind, he advised drivers whose vehicles are damaged by potholes to check the details of their car insurance policies to see if they can recover some of the repair costs.
If policies include cover for accidental damage then pothole-related costs should be recoverable.
However, Mr Powell highlighted the importance of checking the finer details of a car insurance policy before taking it out as they are extremely varied.
"Many motorists don't examine the policy features carefully when they take out their motor insurance," he commented.
"For our Star Ratings, we reviewed 216 comprehensive policies with over 45 features between them so there can be huge differences."
Research published by the AA in March found insurers are paying out £2.85 million every month to cover pothole claims .
