New research by a car insurance company has shown just how far UK motorists drive in a year.
According to Admiral, the typical motorist drives an average of 7,755 miles a year, meaning the total for the population is over 267 billion miles.
In addition to this, despite measures to get people driving less, the average mileage has increased by 4.5 per cent since 2000.
Sue Longthorn, managing director of Admiral, said: "When you see the total mileage we drive it's staggering, especially when you consider there are only around 246,000 miles of road in the country.
"Most motorists don't realise just how far they drive each year as you don't tend to stop and think about it. However, with the price of petrol at an all time high, I'm sure the cost of all these miles would certainly make them stop and think."
Research by AXA recently showed that British motorists drive more often and cover more miles than most other European countries, including Spain, France and Germany .
