Drivers have been urged to improve their attitude towards bikers or risk facing the prospect of having to make a car insurance claim .
Research conducted by Saga shows 75 per cent all motorbike insurance customers over the age of 50 believe drivers are unaware of them while behind the wheel, while 58 per cent said they are flagrantly inconsiderate.
As a result, half of those polled suggested that drivers should be given a virtual motorbike lesson to improve their awareness and attitude towards bikers.
In the meantime, Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman at Saga Group, said bikers should exercise caution.
"Bikers should always expect the unexpected when on the roads as drivers opening car doors without looking or even deep potholes can be treacherous."
He added that car drivers should remember the oft-given advice of "think once, think twice, think bike".
