A new survey by car insurance comparison site Confused.com has shown that the recession has led to British drivers becoming more concerned about the reliability of a car over its looks.
Only 2.8 per cent of those who responded to the survey said that they regard their cars as status symbols, while one in five said that they bought their vehicle based on the trustworthiness of the manufacturer.
According to Confused.com, motorists are looking for ways to reduce their spending during the recession and making sure their car performs well and is reliable has become more important than mere looks.
Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at Confused.com, said: "It seems that they are looking for further ways to reduce their running costs, and our research shows that now even the vehicle itself is the latest to suffer at the hands of the financial squeeze."
Saga recently said that some people were choosing to increase their voluntary excess to reduce the cost of car insurance during the recession, while others physically downgraded their car.
