Car insurance customers are risking damage to their car as well as endangering others' and their own lives because of potholes in the road, according to motor repair service Kwik-Fit .
Last year, 6.2 million motorists suffered car damage due to potholes leading to £380 million worth of repair costs to wheels and tyres, which does not include general repair, suspension, exhaust and bodywork damage.
A survey by the company has also found that nearly one-third of British car insurance policy holders have taken dangerous action to avoid hitting pothole, including swerving towards oncoming traffic, excessive braking and mounting the pavement.
David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, said: "Potholes are like the mines of the road with motorists doing whatever they can to dodge them."
AA Insurance recently revealed that icy weather over the winter had caused more road damage than usual, with car insurance claim figures for vehicles damaged by potholes rising by 200 per cent in February.
