New research from Tescocompare.com shows that young people are getting more expensive cars for their first vehicle, leading to higher car insurance premiums .
Although 35 per cent of the young people surveyed received their first car as a present from their parents, the cars they chose were expensive superminis such as a Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa for 68 per cent.
New saloon cars such as a Renault Laguna or Ford Mondeo were chosen by 11 per cent, in contrast to their parents whose first car was often a hand-me-down hatchback such as a Volkswagen Golf .
Debra Williams, from Tescocompare.com, said: "Whilst they may be saving money on the initial purchase, the fact that the vehicles they typically drive are higher in value could have an impact on the cost of their car insurance ."
The company has urged youngsters to shop around for the best car insurance deals .
Youngsters who like to listen to music in their car may face higher premiums if they are charged under the conviction code CD10 after getting distracted by changing radio station or CD, according to moneysupermarket.com.
