Wed, 25 Mar 2009

Those who enjoy listening to CDs or the radio while driving could face penalties on their car insurance premiums, according to price comparison site moneysupermarket.com.

A new survey by the website has shown that changing stations or picking a new CD is the most common bad habit when it comes to drivers keeping their eyes on the road.

Music distracts 77 per cent of car insurance customers, according to the survey, while eating and drinking are in joint second place (52 per cent) and children, grandparents or pets distract 34 per cent of drivers.

Car owners convicted of "driving without due care or attention" under the conviction code CD10 could see their insurance premiums go up by 26 per cent.

Andy Leadbetter, managing director of moneysupermarket.com, said: "Any lapse in concentration, even for a second to change radio stations or take a bite from a sandwich while driving, could have severe or even fatal consequences."

Saga Motor Insurance recently conducted research which showed that nearly one-fifth of British drivers had got behind the wheel without insurance.
