Hands-free mobile phone kits are not danger free, one home insurance company has warned.
Research by esure car insurance has found that nearly 48 per cent of drivers think such devices put their own and others' safety at risk.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at the car insurance firm, explained that although hands-free kits are legal, people should consider turning off their mobile phone altogether when they hit the road.
"Motorists should always ensure that they pay full attention to the road as opposed to a phone conversation. Any distraction that may compromise the concentration of motorists should be avoided," the car insurance expert said.
Drivers should keep their mobiles switched off until they have finished their journey, he added.
Mr Pickard's comments follow a similar warning from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Northern Ireland who warned that using a mobile phone while driving can increase the chances of a crash and subsequent car insurance claim .
