New research carried out by a car insurance provider claims to show that women are more likely to be stranded in a breakdown situation due to their lack of knowledge about their vehicle .
The Churchill Car Insurance report revealed that 44 per cent of women did not know where to check their oil levels, compared to 21 per cent of men, and 72 per cent of female vehicle owners failed to identify how to monitor their brake fluid .
Some 28 per cent of men considered themselves an expert when it comes to cars, where only five per cent of women did so, while ladies are also more likely to phone a friend rather than attempt to fix a problem themselves.
Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance, says: "Having basic car maintenance knowledge can not only help prevent car breakdown situations, but can keep motorists, especially women, feeling more confident on the roads."
Over-50s who experience a breakdown in their vehicle can now claim back the costs of repair through a new car insurance policy recently unveiled by Saga .
