Holidaymakers are being urged to check they have adequate car insurance when driving on the continent this summer.
According to research by Aviva, Germany and France are the most expensive places to have an accident and drivers should be extra vigilant when on the roads in these nations.
A driver responsible for a crash in Germany will pay an average of £2,940 to a third party, a sum which is 50 per cent higher than elsewhere in Europe.
"We also advise you to make sure that you are properly covered before you go. Otherwise you may have to pay for any claims for damage to your car, whether it's your fault or not. Not to mention the hassle of arranging repair and sorting out the claim in the local language," commented the firm's UK insurance motor underwriting manager Nigel Bartram.
Moneysupermarket.com recently stated that 50 per cent of drivers do not know what their car insurance covers them for when driving overseas.
