Those who are caught drinking and driving once could be banned from ever being issued a car insurance policy again, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
A spokesperson for the organisation said that, while drivers were well aware that drink-driving is "reckless and irresponsible", it is unclear how many realise the effects it can have on getting car insurance .
He added that driving under the influence of alcohol could affect motorists' car insurance premiums for many years after the incident.
"One conviction of drink-driving could mean that many companies won't insure you, at best you'll find insurance very expensive [and] there's a financial cost to drink-driving as well as a social and a legal one," he said.
Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com recently found that those convicted of drink-driving can see their car insurance premiums rise by an average of 48 per cent and over the 11 years the conviction remains on their license.
