Young people facing high premiums on their vehicles should be rewarded with cheap car insurance for improving their driving, according to the AA .
Simon Douglas, director of the car insurance provider, said at the Association of British Insurer's biennial conference that youngsters who can demonstrate they are a less risky driver should not have to put up with raised premiums.
While statistics show that one in five young drivers suffer damage to their vehicles within the first year of passing their test, Mr Douglas believes that this does not mean all new drivers are risky.
He said: "I believe the industry must work together to find a formula that recognises those who are able to demonstrate they take a responsible approach to driving."
Car insurance provider Direct Line recently found that young people aged 18 to 34 are the most likely to drink and drive than those aged 35 to 54, with eight per cent admitting they were more likely to commit the offence than get a taxi .
