A car insurance company has emphasised the need for drivers to make sure they have sufficient cover and are aware of the rules of the road if they are travelling abroad .
Sheilas' Wheels carried out new research, which showed that 2.8 million motorists do not know the speed limits on foreign roads and 15 per cent think their UK car insurance is enough to cover them on the continent.
According to the report, 83 per cent of drivers are heading to France, 23 per cent to Belgium and 19 per cent to Germany, while 15 per cent of people are likely to have some sort of accident involving a car insurance claim .
Jacky Brown, of Sheilas' Wheels car insurance, said: "With the school holidays fast approaching this may be the last thing on parents' minds but it's crucial to plan ahead and get ample insurance cover for added peace of mind."
uSwitch.com recently said that, while many insurers are starting to increase the number of days customers can extend their car insurance to provide cover abroad for free, some still limit holidaymakers to three consecutive days' maximum protection.
