Wed, 24 Jun 2009

Over-50s who experience a breakdown in their vehicle can now claim back the costs of repair through a new car insurance policy from Saga .

Garage labour and replacement parts up to the cost of £500 are now covered under the company's Breakdown Repair protection car insurance option if the driver cannot use the vehicle after the incident.

Research by the car insurance firm shows that the average cost of repairing a gasket failure is £390, while a problem with the alternator can typically set back motorists £285 for garage services .

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, said: "If you are unlucky enough to have a breakdown the last thing you want is to be faced with an unplanned repair bill before you are able to continue your journey."

Car insurance specialist Rias recently claimed that drivers over the age of 50 are running up a multi-million-pound repair bill because they are failing to check the levels of oil in their vehicle.
