Male drivers are paying over the odds for their car insurance, according to new research, while women enjoy much lower premium rates.
Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com surveyed the six million car insurance quotes they dealt with in 2008 and found that the average man paid £743 for a year's cover, compared to £454 for women.
The reason for this discrepancy in car insurance payments, which totals £17,000 over a motorist's lifetime, is given as male drivers' reputation as reckless drivers on the road and as 'boy racers'.
Steve Sweeney, head of home and motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It's clearly careless versus cautious as the motor insurance battle of the sexes lives on, and it is shocking to see the extent of the extra cost to a male driver for a lifetime of being behind the wheel."
However, women are more likely to be stranded in a breakdown situation due to their lack of knowledge about their vehicle, according to recent research carried out by Churchill Car Insurance .
