Introducing Intelligent Speed Adaptation technology (ISA) will not cut the number of accidents and subsequent car insurance claims, according to one expert.
The government believes that by installing the speed limiting device in cars, the number of collisions could be reduced by 29 per cent, news which might interest car insurance customers.
However, the Association of British Drivers (ABD) refutes this, stating that the figure is misleading as the system cannot account for driving in treacherous conditions.
Nigel Humphries, spokesperson for the ABD, said: "The speed of a vehicle is rarely the cause of an accident and the 'correct speed' for the prevailing road conditions cannot be set by a number on a stick."
The move might also encourage car insurance customers to think that the limit is always the correct speed to drive at, something which is not the case, he added.
Yesterday, it was revealed that rock star Iggy Pop is to front a car insurance advertising campaign for Swiftcover.com.
