Women and older drivers should not be drawn in by specialist car insurance providers, according to one expert.
A study by Moneysupermarket.com found that a 30-year-old woman driving a Ford Focus who opts for a women-only car insurance deal will pay an average of 60 per cent more than with a traditional provider.
Older drivers who opt for specialist car insurance could end up paying an average of 80 per cent more, the study revealed.
Andy Leadbetter, managing director of insurance at the price comparison website, said: "Our research shows it pays to scour the whole market for the best value policy to suit individual circumstances; paying almost £400 over the odds is an unnecessary expenditure."
Specialist car insurance policies often come with extra benefits, but people should consider if these are worth the extra cost, he added.
Last week, a study by uSwitch.com revealed that people who lose their job could see their car insurance premium increase by 20 per cent when they come to renew it.
