The number of 4X4 vehicles on Britain's roads has doubled in the last ten years, research by one car insurance firm reveals.
A study by women's car insurance specialist Diamond also found that the vehicles' popularity shows no sign of falling, with a ten per cent increase in the figure in the last year alone.
Sian Lewis, managing director of the car insurance firm, explained that parents see 4X4s as an easy way to ferry their kids around.
"You'd expect farmers to be most likely to drive a 4x4 but for child minders to be second in the list emphasises how popular 4x4s have become away from what they were originally designed for," the car insurance expert added.
The most popular vehicle in this class is the Land Rover Freelander, the study found.
Yesterday, the AA warned people not to lie in an attempt to obtain cheaper car insurance .
Simon Douglas, director at the firm, warned that if people do this their car insurance will not be valid.
