Government launches car insurance clampdown

Wed, 21 Jan 2009

Details of new powers aimed at tackling those who drive without car insurance have been revealed.

Under the new rules it will be an offence to keep a vehicle without car insurance, rather than just driving while uninsured .

According to Jim Fitzpatrick, road safety minister, this will make it easier to catch car insurance dodgers .

"Increased police powers already mean more than 400 uninsured vehicles are seized every day but these tough new measures will leave uninsured drivers with nowhere to hide," he said.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency will work with the car insurance industry to identify offenders.

People will then receive a letter telling them that their vehicle seems not to be covered and warning them they face a fine unless they take out car insurance within a set period.

If they do not, the car insurance dodger will be fined £100.

Yesterday, esure warned that January weather can lead to an increased number of car insurance claims .

The firm warned motorists to be vigilant in unpleasant conditions.
