Car keys are set to be one of the most sought after items for thieves in the year ahead, one insurance firm has warned.
Research by car insurance company esure revealed at 90 per cent of high-value vehicle thefts in last year involved the use of the original keys.
Gordon Hannah, head of claims at esure car insurance, explained that the use of immobilisers and other security devices has led criminals to use other methods.
"It is especially alarming that thieves who used to target cars directly are now resorting to the much more sinister crime of seizing keys directly from the owners or their homes by forcible means," he said.
For this reason, people should never flaunt their car keys and keep them secure when they are left at home, the car insurance expert advised.
Recently, a study by uSwitch.com found that people who lose their job face an increase of 20 per cent in the cost of their car insurance .
