Clamping down on people who avoid car insurance is a welcome move, according to one firm.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, explained that Britain has one of the worst rates of uninsured drivers in Europe, so any move to cut this figure should be applauded.
According to Mr Douglas, those driving without cover add around £30 to the cost of a car insurance policy .
Under the new regulations, it will be an offence to keep a vehicle without car insurance, with perpetrators facing fines of £100.
"This is, of course, in addition to the penalty for driving without insurance which attracts a fine of up to £5,000 and six to eight penalty points," Mr Douglas said.
However, he warned that a sympathetic approach will need to be taken when it comes to people whose car insurance expires while they are in hospital or away from home.
Recently, Hayley Parsons, chief executive of comparison website Gocompare.com, urged people to shop around for their car insurance.
