The snow which gripped the country yesterday has led to a surge in car insurance claims, it has been revealed.
According to esure, it received double the average number of calls to its car insurance claims line as people struggled with the adverse weather conditions.
Adrian Webb, head of communications at the car insurance firm, advised people to take warm clothes, a mobile phone and a flask of hot drink with them on every journey in case they get stuck.
"The situation has been made much worse because garages and rescue services are also overwhelmed too and they are having to make their way to broken-down cars in exactly the same terrible conditions," the car insurance expert said.
Drivers should also make sure they give priority to vehicles coming up hills as many problems have been caused by cars stopping on an incline and not being able to start again, he added.
Yesterday, Moneysupermarket.com warned that people who opt for green car insurance could end up paying around 150 per cent more than if they opted for a standard policy.
