Car insurance fraud is not a victimless crime, one expert has warned.
Zoe Rilley, a spokesperson for RSA, explained that while most people think they are not doing any harm if they inflate a car insurance claim, they are in fact increasing the cost of premiums up and down the country.
According to Ms Rilley, car insurance fraud costs the industry £1.6 billion a year and that this adds around five per cent to every policyholder's premium.
She asked the public to remain vigilant and play their part in stamping the crime out.
"RSA calls on all consumers to report anyone they suspect of committing insurance fraud . The Insurance Fraud Bureau has a specific hotline set up to make this easy and confidential," she said.
Recently, Mike Smith, commercial motor technical manager at Norwich Union, warned that the recession will cause an increase in the number of people committing car insurance fraud.
He suggested people who are involved in a crash take photos of the damage so the other party cannot exaggerate their claim .
