People who opt for eco-friendly car insurance could end up paying more for the privilege, according to new research.
A study by Moneysupermarket.com revealed that the cost of green car insurance is around 150 per cent higher than that of a standard policy.
People who drive a Toyota Prius will pay £319 for their annual car insurance with Swiftcover, while an eco-friendly policy will cost up to £785.
Andy Leadbetter, managing director of insurance at the price comparison website, said: "Shopping around for the best value motor insurance for your circumstances is crucial, and then if you can afford it, you could donate the money you save to an eco-friendly charity of your choice."
When looking at car insurance people should not only consider the price but also the level of cover they are getting, he added.
Last week, Gordon Hannah, head of claims at esure car insurance, advised people to make sure they keep the keys to their vehicle in a safe place as these are increasingly a target for thieves.
