Neglecting car insurance could lead to confiscation

Thu, 09 Apr 2009

New technology has led to catching more people who drive their vehicles uninsured, or who are late renewing their car insurance .

More than 170,000 drivers were stopped by police in 2008, compared to 78,000 in 2006, according to new research.

Commenting on the figures, Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, said automatic number plate recognition systems have helped alert police to cars not on the Motor Insurer's Database (MID), reducing the £500 million per year caused by accidents involving uninsured drivers .

He added: "The moment a [car insurance] policy expires it is deleted from the MID. If you're late renewing, or take out a new policy after your existing one has lapsed or if you buy a new car, it can take three or four days before details of the new policy are updated."

Other technology helping to cut car insurance costs is the video surveillance systems for vehicles announced recently by Allianz Commercial, which will aid proving liability for claims .
