A new report has found that three million British car insurance policy holders have driven after their MOT test certification expired.
Sixty-five per cent of respondents to the uSwitch.com survey said that they had gone onto the roads despite the fact their MOT had gone past its expiration date and 79 per cent blamed their error on forgetfulness.
But motorists are slow to book another test, with a third taking up to a month and ten per cent taking even longer, up to twelve months.
uSwitch.com has urged car insurance customers to refrain from driving without valid MOT certification .
Mark Monteiro, car insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Failure to remember your MOT renewal date is not only an offence, but the potential safety and financial consequences are a hefty price to pay for an innocent lapse of memory."
Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com recently revealed in a survey that those with driving convictions will face higher premiums on their car insurance .
