IAM backs government plans for car insurance penalties

Mon, 20 Apr 2009

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has welcomed plans by the government to apply instant fines for those found driving without car insurance.

It is estimated that there are two million uninsured drivers in the UK, according to the organisation, and, as long as databases are reliable, the proposals will benefit the majority of car insurance customers .

The Department for Transport has said that instant fines will be applied even if the car is not being used, with the DVLA sending out letters to motorists to remind them if their car insurance is about to expire.

Peter Rodger, chief examiner for IAM, said: "These illegal motorists not only represent a threat to other road users, but also place a financial burden on the remaining 94 per cent of law abiding motorists."

The Royal Bank of Scotland recently backed a decision to fine a car insurance fraudster, who exaggerated symptoms of her injuries to get more money following a crash.
