Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has said that those with driving convictions will find it hard to get cheap car insurance, if they can get any at all.
Those convicted of drink driving can see their car insurance premiums rise by an average of 48 per cent and over the 11 years the conviction remains on their license, this could add up to an extra £2,300 on average in insurance costs .
Speeders and mobile users could also see car insurance costs rise - up to £150 a year extra for those caught speeding three times and at least £90 for those caught using their phone at the wheel.
Head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com Steve Sweeney said: "The rules of the road are there for a reason, especially when it comes to drink-driving. My advice is to take care on the roads at all times and think responsibly about the potential consequences of your actions."
Those who neglect their car insurance may also see their car confiscated by police if they are late renewing, according to AA Insurance .
