A new survey by car insurance provider Saga has found that over two-thirds of British people are cutting motor costs during the recession .
To save reducing the quality of their car insurance cover, 70 per cent of people are cutting the amount they spend on their vehicle day-to-day, saving an average of £17 a month.
Some are reducing the number of miles they drive each week (37 per cent), with nearly half of over-50s adopting this approach, saving money and carbon emissions .
Twenty-eight per cent are searching for cheaper fuel, 15 per cent are taking better care of their cars and 17 per cent are washing their motors themselves.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga Group, said: "It's a positive thing that people are taking practical steps in order to cut down on motoring costs . By adopting simple changes, such as washing cars by hand or checking tyre pressures more regularly, motorists can significantly cut their monthly outgoings."
Recent research by car insurance company LV= showed that 83 per cent of motorists would choose better car insurance at a higher cost if the quality was guaranteed.
