People who car share might need to change their insurance cover to account for this, drivers have been warned.
Although the majority of journeys made under such circumstances will be covered by car insurance as a matter of course, others might not be, reports thegreencarwebsite.co.uk.
Research by the AA reveals that 14 per cent of people use their vehicle to take colleagues to work meetings and, according to Ian Crowder, spokesperson for the firm, this might not be covered in a standard car insurance policy .
Speaking to the news provider he said: "If this is the case, you may not be covered on your current policy and need to upgrade to 'occasional business use'."
Regardless of the circumstances of their car sharing people should check their insurance before doing so, he added.
Yesterday, Comparethemarket.com warned that people who use their mobile phone while driving risk invalidating their car insurance if they have an accident when doing so.
