Consumers looking to go green with their car insurance could end up paying even more, according to one price comparison website .
Research by Moneysupermarket.com reveals that green car insurance can be 105 per cent more expensive than standard policies.
According to Peter Gerrard, people looking to reduce the impact of motoring on the environment should not assume environmentally-friendly car insurance is the place to start.
"My advice is to shop around for the best value deal that meets your needs and give some of the money you save direct to eco-friendly causes," he said.
This means that people will be helping the environment but also getting value for money on their car insurance at the same time, Mr Gerrard added.
Yesterday, Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, suggested people who are struggling to afford car insurance speak to an intermediary who will be able to help them find the best deal.
