People who modify their vehicles would be "mad" not to tell their car insurance firm about it, motorists have been warned.
According to Tesco Car Insurance, even small additions, such as a set of alloy wheels, can void a policy in the event of a claim if the provider is in the dark.
Research by the car insurance firm reveals that 15 per cent of drivers have modified their cars in someway.
The increase in popularity of modifying vehicles can be put down in part to programmes such as Tim Westwood's Pimp My Ride UK, the firm stated.
Commenting on the matter, Westwood suggested people who make changes to their car should be wary of security too.
He said: "I've never had anything stolen from a ride, but I'm very careful where I park. I don't randomly leave my car anywhere."
Yesterday, Direct Line called for tougher penalties for people who drive without car insurance .
