Drivers do not seem to be taking enough care on the road, according to one car insurance firm .
Research by Confused.com, the car insurance comparison website, found 12 million people would not past their driving test if they had to sit it again.
The study also found 17-24 years are most confident about their driving abilities, with 76 per cent saying they would pass their test, but 65 per cent also admitted to speeding or driving with one hand on the wheel.
Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at Confused.com, said: " Reckless driving can be extremely costly for motorists, not least in terms of car insurance premiums which rocket as drivers rack up points."
People should take the time to reacquaint themselves with the Highway Code in order to boost their driving skills, he added.
Yesterday, Money.co.uk reported comments by Mike Powell, principal consultant of general insurance at Defaqto, who reminded students to inform their car insurance company of their new address when moving.
If they do not do this they may find their policy is invalid, he warned.
