Whiplash making car insurance more expensive, expert warns

Fri, 14 Nov 2008

Claims for whiplash add more to the cost of the average car insurance policy than accidents with drivers who lack cover, it has been claimed.

According to Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, the cost of such injuries equates to around £66 for every car insurance policy in the UK.

This is around 14 per cent of the cost of the average car insurance premium and twice as much as the cost added by uninsured drivers, he stated.

" Whiplash injury will become an increasingly important factor in future premium increases," he said.

Edmund King, president of the AA, claimed that most whiplash injuries are avoidable and advised people to adjust head rests before setting off on a journey.

He also told car insurance customers to make sure they maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them as this will reduce the chances of injury .

A recent operation by police and the government found there are fewer people driving without valid car insurance than there were in 2006.
