Car insurance customers should do more to make sure their vehicle is secure, one police force has warned.
PC Dave Bale, spokesperson for the Airedale and North Bradford Crime Reduction Unit, explained that by taking a few simple steps, drivers can reduce the chances of a break-in and subsequent car insurance claim .
He said: "It only takes a few seconds to take personal valuables out of your car when you leave it and by doing so you really do reduce your risk of becoming a victim."
Car insurance customers should always make it as difficult as possible for criminals, PC Bale added.
Other steps which should be taken include ensuring that doors are never left unlocked, even at petrol stations or outside a shop, he stated.
Last week, a study by Moneysupermarket.com revealed that drivers in the East Sussex village of Winchelsea are more likely to claim on their car insurance because their vehicle has been stolen than motorists living in other areas of the UK.
