Car insurance customers who do not have breakdown cover are playing "roadside roulette", one expert has warned.
According to AA Patrol of the Year Andy Taylor, people who do not take out such protection on top of their car insurance face paying a hefty bill for help should things go wrong while they are driving.
He said: "It will cost you dearly if you break down - in money, time and sheer stress. Just ask those who have lost £120 million in the last year - that's enough to buy 12,000 new cars ."
Things which will not be covered under standard car insurance policies, such as flat batteries, tyre problems and lost keys are much more likely in the winter, he added.
For this reason people should make sure they have breakdown cover on top of their usual car insurance, Mr Taylor stated.
Yesterday, Andy Leadbetter, head of motor and home insurance for Moneysupermarket.com, advised people looking to save money to switch to a smaller call.
This is because car insurance firms partly base their prices on the size of a vehicle and its engine, he explained.
