People caught drink-driving face a hefty increase in the cost of their car insurance, one price comparison website has warned.
According to research by Moneysupermarket.com, people who are caught driving while under the influence face an 82 per cent hike in the price of their car insurance premium and some may not be able to get cover at all.
The study found that esure, Halifax and Sheilas' Wheels will not even offer a car insurance quote to someone who has been banned for drink-driving.
Andy Leadbetter, head of insurance at the website, said: "With so many motorists taking a risk behind the wheel, it's not a surprise the insurance industry takes drink-driving very seriously."
He advised people looking to enjoy the Christmas party season to make sure they arrange a way to get home which does not involve them getting behind the wheel.
Recently, car insurance firm Liverpool Victoria urged people not to leave valuables in their vehicles as this can encourage thieves to break in.
