Drivers need to change their behaviour on the road, one car insurance firm has warned.
According to Frances Browning, spokesperson for Direct Line Car Insurance, some road users tailgate others on the motorway in an attempt to make them go faster.
The car insurance expert stated that this practice is responsible for around seven per cent of all traffic accidents in the country and is one of the main reasons for whiplash injuries .
She said: "We urge drivers to try to prevent whiplash by keeping a safe distance - at least two seconds from the vehicle in front of them."
Drivers should not put pressure on other road users to speed up, Ms Browning added.
Her comments come after research by the AA revealed that whiplash injuries are adding around £66 to the cost of the average car insurance policy .
According to the firm, this is twice as much of the cost extra cost needed to cover those who drive without car insurance.
