Switching to third-party car insurance could end up costing more in the long run, one expert has warned.
Writing for the Daily Mirror, John Husband stated that a recent survey by uSwitch.com found that 40 per cent of people are making cuts which cost more than they actually save.
He stated that although changing from comprehensive to third-party only car insurance will save people a small amount of money, it could prove costly.
"Even if you have an accident that's not your fault you'll only get your car repaired for free if the driver responsible is insured and stops to give you his particulars," Mr Husband said.
This means that people who fall victim to a hit-and-run driver, or even have their vehicle damaged by a storm, will not be able to rely on their car insurance to pay the cost of damages.
Last week, PC Lee Morris, from Durham Constabulary, warned drivers not to leave their keys in their car to defrost it on cold mornings.
Speaking to the Northern Echo, he advised that not only does this provide an opportunity for thieves, but it could also invalidate any car insurance claim .
