Car insurance warning over handbags

Thu, 27 Nov 2008

Female car insurance customers could be putting themselves at risk of losing a total of £178 million by not looking after their handbag .

According to research by women's car insurance specialist Diamond, more than 400,000 female drivers have had their bag stolen from their vehicle in the last year.

The average cost of the item and its contents come to £431.68.

Sian Lewis, managing director of the car insurance firm, said: "It's shocking to see just how many handbags are stolen each year from cars, and that shows exactly why you should never leave your bag on display in your car."

Car insurance customers should be even more careful in the run up to Christmas as opportunistic thieves will on the prowl, she added.

Last week, the AA urged drivers to make sure they take out both car insurance and roadside protection cover .

If they do not, people could be left with a hefty bill if they break down at the side of the road, the firm warned.
